In my view a lot of current owners value their EVs as virtue-signalling.

South Park had a funny take on the virtue-signalling EV owner. https://youtu.be/ecnS1Ygf0o0?feature=shared

Good observation. EV sales are not catching on very well, even with taxpayer money for subsidies going to both the manufacturers and the consumers. And as you point out, most of the consumers of EVs are wealthy enough to afford them along with a gas-fired backup vehicle. No wonder the gap between the rich and the lower classes gets bigger.

From what I have seen, the average EV owner is university educated, earns more than 6-figures, and (as Josh noted in his article above) has at least one other vehicle (typically an ICE vehicle). https://www.parking-mobility.org/2022/12/19/electric-vehicle-inequities/

I saw 4 Teslas in our hospital’s parking lot. They were all in the spaces “Reserved Doctors”.

In UK NHS workers have access to a salary sacrifice scheme. “The way the NHS salary sacrifice scheme is designed means that a worker gives up a proportion of their salary in exchange for non-cash related benefits. For some, this can provide support with sometimes costly outgoings such as childcare and the expense of running a car”. Two friends of mine had Tesla’s on this scheme, one I know did around 75 miles daily, after having their vehicles 3 years they exchanged for hybrid BMW’s under same scheme, both told me the reason was range anxiety, so having to remember to charge their car at every opportunity🤔

Batteries run down so much faster in cold weather, and take longer to charge, that they better hope for a mild winter, or they’ll be calling for a gas engine Uber for a ride to make it home.

Agree, and therein lies the problem for those with EV’s in below zero winters, batteries have built in heaters, a drain; these luxury cars have heated seats, a drain; and of course heated mirrors and rear screens, a drain; then there’s aircon and demisters, all a drain on the battery, a so if you’re stuck in a jam it’s an anxious time. ICE vehicles can run out of Gas on a jammed up freeway, but breakdown recovery can bring some Gas for many vehicles in that situation, they don’t bring battery packs, and charging a battery pack is not a quick fix🤔✌️

And an ICE vehicle can carry an extra gas can, a good precaution in the winter.

No more subsidies! We voted and now we want a much smaller and fiscally responsible government.
